Maryam Javaid

I bring a unique perspective that sits at the intersection of identity, culture, history, leadership, and personal transformation.

As a TEDx speaker, thought leader, founder of Black and Brown Parenting, and someone who has spent over eight years working with parents, families, organisations, and communities, I bring both lived experience and professional expertise to conversations about who we become, who we are expected to be, and what it means to consciously create our own path.

My academic background in South Asian and African Colonial History, alongside postgraduate studies in Education, allows me to explore how historical, cultural, and social expectations continue to shape the way we see ourselves, build confidence, define success, and navigate belonging.

As the eldest daughter of immigrant parents, a mother of three, and a woman raising a family within a Black and Brown household, my work is deeply rooted in understanding the tension many people experience between honouring where they come from and becoming who they are meant to be.

For “The Life You Thought You’d Have vs The One You’re Creating”, I bring insight into the identity shifts that happen when we begin questioning the expectations we inherited. Many people grow up following a path that was designed around family, culture, success, or acceptance, only to reach a point where they have to ask: “Is this actually the life I want, or the life I was taught to want?” My work explores how we can acknowledge our past, understand the stories that shaped us, and still give ourselves permission to create something different.

Through Black and Brown Parenting, I have created spaces for honest conversations around conscious parenting, generational cycles, cultural expectations, and creating healthier futures for the next generation. My work recognises that the way we parent, lead, communicate, and show up in the world is often connected to the stories we inherited.

Beyond my subject expertise, I bring experience in creating conversations that connect deeply with diverse audiences. My work and commentary have been featured by the BBC, ITV News, and the Daily Mirror, and I have spoken at leadership conferences, educational institutions, faith-based organisations, community events, and professional spaces.

I bring a combination of storytelling, research, lived experience, and practical insight. Audiences can expect honest conversations that go beyond surface-level empowerment, conversations that challenge assumptions, create reflection, and inspire meaningful change.

My goal is always to leave people with one powerful question: Who could you become if you stopped living only according to what was expected of you?

Because when we choose to heal, grow, and redefine ourselves, we do not only change our own lives, we change what becomes possible for the generations that follow.
