Adeshola Akanji

I am an NHS leader, disability advocate, entrepreneur, speaker, community leader, and champion for inclusion, accessibility, and representation. My personal and professional journey has been shaped by lived experience, resilience, and a deep commitment to creating positive change for individuals and communities who are often underrepresented or overlooked.

Throughout my career, I have been passionate about improving outcomes for people, whether through healthcare leadership, disability advocacy, community engagement, or empowering others to recognise and realise their potential. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances, background, health condition, or disability.

My professional experience within the NHS has provided me with extensive insight into healthcare leadership, service improvement, patient experience, operational management, and the importance of creating inclusive environments where both patients and staff can succeed. Alongside my leadership responsibilities, I have actively contributed to initiatives that promote equality, diversity, inclusion, wellbeing, and accessibility.

A significant part of my journey has been influenced by living with multiple long-term health conditions and disabilities. Navigating the challenges associated with chronic illness, fluctuating health, accessibility barriers, and societal misconceptions has given me a unique perspective on resilience, self-advocacy, and the importance of creating systems that work for everyone.

For many years, I felt pressure to demonstrate strength through perseverance alone. Like many people living with disabilities or long-term conditions, I became accustomed to overcoming barriers, adapting to changing circumstances, and pushing forward despite challenges. Over time, however, I learned that resilience is about more than endurance. It is about self-awareness, self-compassion, adaptability, and having the courage to ask for support when needed.

These experiences have shaped my passion for disability inclusion and accessibility. I firmly believe that disabled people should not simply be accommodated; they should be empowered, represented, and actively involved in shaping the decisions, services, and policies that affect their lives.

Alongside my NHS leadership role, I co-chair a disability staff network, where I work collaboratively with colleagues to improve inclusion, raise awareness, support disabled staff, and advocate for meaningful change within the workplace. This role has provided opportunities to engage with senior leaders, contribute to strategic discussions, and ensure that the voices and experiences of disabled colleagues are heard and valued.

Beyond the workplace, I have been privileged to contribute to a number of national and regional advisory groups, lived experience panels, and community initiatives focused on disability, health inequalities, inclusion, wellbeing, and physical activity. These opportunities have enabled me to bring both lived and professional experience to important conversations and help influence positive change across a range of sectors.

I am also the founder of Ultimate Royal UK, an organisation dedicated to empowerment, personal development, leadership, advocacy, and social impact. Through Ultimate Royal UK, I support individuals and organisations through speaking engagements, mentoring, awareness campaigns, consultancy, and community initiatives. My mission is to inspire confidence, encourage authentic leadership, and help people recognise that their circumstances do not define their potential.

In addition to my work in healthcare and advocacy, I have embraced opportunities that challenge traditional perceptions of disability and representation. Through public speaking, modelling, pageantry, media features, and community engagement, I seek to demonstrate that disability and chronic illness do not limit ambition, leadership, beauty, or achievement.

As Ms London City, I have used my platform to raise awareness of disability inclusion, health conditions, accessibility, mental wellbeing, and charitable causes. I have had the privilege of supporting campaigns, participating in awareness initiatives, engaging with communities, and using my voice to advocate for greater understanding and inclusion.

My work has also led to involvement with a variety of charities, community organisations, and awareness campaigns, including those focused on disability, chronic illness, carers, mental health, neurological conditions, and health equity. These experiences continue to reinforce my belief that meaningful change happens when people are willing to listen, learn, collaborate, and act.

What I bring to this session is a combination of professional expertise, lived experience, authentic storytelling, and practical insight. I understand the realities of navigating leadership while managing long-term health conditions. I understand the challenges that can arise when people feel unseen, unheard, or underestimated. Most importantly, I understand the transformative impact that inclusion, representation, and opportunity can have on individuals and communities.

My speaking style is honest, relatable, and empowering. I believe in sharing not only successes but also the lessons learned through setbacks, uncertainty, and adversity. Audiences often connect with the authenticity of my journey because it reflects challenges many people face in different forms throughout their own lives.

Whether discussing resilience, disability inclusion, leadership, wellbeing, accessibility, personal growth, or overcoming barriers, my aim is always to inspire meaningful reflection and action. I want people to leave feeling empowered to challenge limiting beliefs, embrace their authentic selves, and recognise the value they bring to the world.

Through this session, I hope to create a space for learning, inspiration, and connection. I want to encourage conversations
