There is MORE TO organising when it is with children in mind and that is so apparent on our Kids Zone.
Creating an environment that encourages children to access all the areas of learning and providing open ended invitations to play, means they learn and thrive.
Role play and small world provide important opportunities for speech and language as well as imaginative play.
Construction areas provide important fine motor opportunities as well as being creative and offering problem solving skills.
Organic writing opportunities such as shopping lists in the role play area rather than writing being a separate section make mark making inviting and not a task.
In the creative areas as well as colouring, we will have playdough and painting sessions. These are so great for fine motor development as well as creativity.
These are sessions rather than continuous provision (out all the time) to reduce the mess while still allowing for the children to explore messy play. It is important to encourage our children to explore different textures but it does not have to be something that is accessible at all times. Water play and sand play are also great as well as mud kitchens in the garden.
Understanding the world can be accessed through the books, small world and role play and maths opportunities through counting and adding or recognising shapes and colours in the construction area.
When organising their resources, you do not need everything out all at once. Rotation of resources means you don’t need the farm animals and the zoo out at the same time. Swap out like for like to reduce the overwhelm and make it easier to tidy up.
The most important thing for our kids’ zone is that the resources provided are diverse and inclusive. From the books in the reading corner, to the people in the dolls’ house as well as a little wooden wheel chair, meaning the children and their families feel represented and included.
The resources are all labelled with words and pictures so even children can not read yet know where to find things and where to put them back.
